Ask yourself this question to avoid comparing yourself to others.

Instead of comparing yourself to others and saying you want to be like that person ask yourself this instead.

How good could I potentially get at this?

You could use this in many different scenarios. Working out? “How strong could I get” or “How fast can I get”. If you’re 5’7 150 lbs, like me, it’s not realistic to compare your strength to someone who’s a bodybuilder who’s 6’5 250 lbs.

Doing presentations? “How good could I get at this?” Really visualize how good you think YOU could get at something.

I think this question motivates you to become the best you can be while keeping some realistic expectations. It also allows it to stay flexible because your expectations could change over time. You might think right now you could improve so much until one day you reach that and realize you can still go so much further. It’s all about figuring out where you are currently at, getting an idea and visualize what your potential is and then working towards that. This mindset is entirely focused on your improvement and has nothing to do with anyone else. There’s nothing wrong with seeing how others achieved their goals and asking questions but you need to focus on your own journey.

I also find this question kind of exciting. Wondering how far you can take this. You look at a very heavy weight at the gym and ask yourself “do I think at some point I’ll be able to lift that?” or you read a really good article one day on medium and ask yourself “do I think I could write and article like that or even better than that one day?”

What’s stopping you from become the best you can be? I mean really, how good could you become? There’s only one way to find out.
